Bring back the Banner

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 11th October 2017

Kath runs a project called Remembering the Past resourcing the future and this presentation was the about 18 month taken to restoring Burradon and Weetslade colliery Banner.

The film shown was of the process which was undertaken to remove Gaffer tape which was holding the remnants of the banner clear the gum deposits clean all surfaces and fill in the holes. There were many interviews with local people expressing memories about life in the pit villages their spare time activities, and differences between then and now.

When asked for their views on the banner the reply given was “The banner is the last artefact of their mining heritage, It has drawn all age groups of the village together which was clearly demonstrated with the attendance of 150 from our community at the Durham Miners Gala”. This talk brought back a lot of memories to our members even though they were not directly involved in mining.

A very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed the presentation
