Odd Places

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 25th January 2020

A very interesting and sometimes humorous presentation this week was given by Mr George Robson a retired teacher, long time Magistrate and part time speaker.

His presentation started with a short outline of what he means by Odd Places, he had been studying Atlases and maps when he came upon several odd things.

Enclaves and Exclaves on the Netherlands and Belgium border, 5732 parcels of land that are surrounded by Belgium some quite small others much larger, photos of one pub which has the borders line through its main room with one house where the border line is painted up the front door to the roof. Other plots of land are completely surrounded which makes taxes, laws, postage stamps, coins and other thing problematic all due to historical events. Similar features around the world were mentioned e.g. Cypress was given independence but it excluded the two militaries, many island’s in the pacific have similar problems where they were found by one country but have been taken by another with a token building or plot of land was retained.

Questions followed to conclude the presentation

A very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed the presentation
